- How to become yourself again.
How to become yourself again.
When I started my career switch... From a professional online marketer to a coach for solopreneurs, I thought the main thing I needed to do was to learn as many coaching models and tools as I could.
When I started my career switch...
From a professional online marketer to a coach for solopreneurs, I thought the main thing I needed to do was to learn as many coaching models and tools as I could.
This was my belief.
So, I studied at two different colleges at the same time and also took extra courses for a better understanding of coaching theory.
But these models and tools didn’t help me become the great coach I wanted to be. It made me a “robocoach”. Someone who knows a lot, but still, something is missing...
When I realized something was missing, I joined a program with practical coaching sessions under supervision.
A supervisor is a more experienced coach who helps you develop your own coaching style.
During the practice, I realized that my belief about how to become a coach was wrong from the start.
Coaching isn't something you learn. It's something you become.
The more you practice, the better coach you become. It’s a combination of unique skill and art, like writing or playing the piano.
Each coach has their own unique style that can only be developed with practice and the right supervision from a more experienced coach.
That’s it.
Coaching is more about unlearning things that hold you back from being a good coach than learning new things.
In my case, it was perfectionism...
I was coming to coaching sessions and trying to be perfect.
Trying to ask the perfect question.
Trying to create the biggest insight for my coachee.
When in reality, this was the reason my coaching sessions weren’t good enough.
And then I just got tired of it... Tired of trying to be something I’m not. Tired of trying to be perfect.
When I came to this point, I went to the coaching session “clean”.
Just me as I am.
And then magic happened…
My supervisor said that what I did in the session is what coaches learn only after thousands of hours of coaching.
Imagine my ego at this moment... I felt like Superman. But honestly, I was just happy that I was becoming better at what was important to me.
She asked: 'What did you do differently?'
I said": “Nothing... I just stopped trying to be perfect and came clean. I didn’t even bring my pen to take notes.”
I unlearned something that was holding me back. Holding me from doing things that I want to.
My way of being started to shift, and, interestingly, my results got better.
When I became such a perfectionist about everything, only God knows and remembers... And right now, it doesn’t matter.
The question you should ask yourself is: What do you need to unlearn to become yourself again?
In my eyes, this is the way to be happier and feel a real freedom in your life."
Take care,
Alex
